When the band Phoenix described Ti Amo the album, they said it was meant to sound like an eternal roman summer, melted gelato and jukeboxes on the beach. That's exactly what it sounds like to me - a grand, melodramatic romance on the amalfi coast, memories made on a holiday that will eventually end. It sounds like what it feels like to be hopelessly and passionately in love. Each track sort of potrays an aspect of love - tutti frutti feels like an obsessive, passionate kind of world wind, one night romance, goodbye soliel feels like someone reminicsing about young love, fior di latte about sensual desire etc. etc. Fav Songs : Telefono, Tutti Frutti, Fior Di Latte |
As much as I LOVE love songs I’m always uber impressed when a band does songs that aren’t about romantic relationships, which is why I love Foster the People !!!
I think people fall into writing love songs because everyone’s been in love, and its such a strong visceral emotion that’s really easy to not only translate into song, but to relate to. Have you ever sang a love song or break up song out loud? It kind of feels like you’re releasing all these silly vulnerable thoughts you’ve had sitting on the tip of your tongue secretly through singing in the shower. Its kind of cathartic. RIGHT SORRY BACK TO FOSTER THE PEOPLE but also not sorry because its my blog so I can write whatever I want.
Anyways, their songs cover a range of topics from creative block, self doubt, grief, and dying that I resonate very strongly with. The cinematic - like electro synth backing paired with the lead singers uniquely shouty singing ( IN A GOOD WAY ) makes every song feel like a revelation / declaration. Are you what you want to be ? I’ll be here no matter where you are. Focus on your abilities.

An album that can only be concocted by the brain of a man who went on James Corden’s show to promote his album and proceeded to create the most cringe inducing moment ever filmed live. If I was one of the audience members I would’ve clenched my teeth so hard cracks would begin to show on my molars. But anyways. Just like the James Corden interview, the album is strange, experiemental, inaudible and kinda awesome.
In Virtue, The Voidz feel like a band straight out of a techno-dystopian future ala blade runner. My advice for listening to this album is you really need a second-third-fourth listen to love it. LIKE TRUST THE PROCESS GUYS. It’s really catchy and awesome its just that your brain will be put off by the first listen.

MGMT made Goth Pop cool!!! The tracks in LDA always have a slight backdrop of impending doom and fear ( except for me and michael, the GOAT love song ) like you’re walking down the street at night and you feel like you’re going to be the nameless victim in the starting scene of a vampire and/or killer clown movie. Its like a regular awesome album but slightly cursed in this demented clown spirit way. If you like synths and want to feel like you’re in a kinda silly inescapable nightmare give it a go.
FAV SONG : Little Dark Age, When You Die, Me and Michael
While Ti Amo by Phoenix reminds me of grand romances from the golden age of cinema like Casablancas and La Dolce Vita, Gus Dapperton’s Where Polly People Go to Read reminds me of the slightly cynical, pessimistic and pathetic feelings that come from the modern dating scene. Like this Album would be the movie soundtrack for Sally Rooney’s “Normal People” or you’d listen to this album after your 3 month long situationship ghosts you.
I know I’m making this sound bad, but It isn’t! Its just realistic. Love isn’t about sweeping people off their feet all the time, sometimes its about being a little bit pathetic and embarrassing because its about being vulnerable. Its not about grand declarations of love but rather saying I love you in a kind of whiny and roundabout way.
Instead of an “I Love You” , you get a “ You’re my favourite fish” or a “ I’m so awfully down, when he’s around you”

We love an album about yearning and longing here in Chereal’s Corner guys. I loooove all of Hozier’s albums but this one man. This one has some of the most beautiful lyrics he’s ever written. The songs in this album feel like a fleeting memory, like if you don’t treat it with care, it’s so fragile the moment will disappear. Even the more energetic songs like “ Dinner and Diatribes” have this effect. The road sign that says “Approach with Caution” comes to mind. Like if he comes right out and says “ I love you” or “I miss you” she’s simply shatter into pieces and scatter like the wind.
